Travel guide for the city of Nottingham, UK
By Ben Jackson
Nottingham is right in the centre of England. Home of the legend of Robin Hood and Sherwood Forest, it has been the source of inspiration for literary greats like Byron and there is plenty for the visitor to explore. The central focus point of the city is the Old Market Square, built in 1920, and the main shopping streets fan out from here. If you’re looking for something more outside the ordinary, try exploring Hockley Village, to the east, where the majority of the city’s independent shops can be found. The Castle Wharf area beside the canals is a hotspot for nightlife, where many trendy bars and restaurants have opened up. Nottingham Castle is set in beautiful Victorian gardens and offers a spectacular view over the city. Underneath there are tunnels and caves to be explored, some dating back to mediaeval times. No trip to Nottingham would be complete without a visit to Sherwood Forest, where you can go walking, cycling or horseriding in the woods where Robin Hood once roamed. In the forest grounds you can also find the Adrenaline Jungle, offering a range of more adventurous activities like paintballing, quad biking, 4x4 driving and assault courses. There is plenty more on offer in Nottingham for sporty types, for example, at the National Watersports Centre where you can canoe, water ski, row or even try white water rafting. WHERE TO STAY To stay out in the heart of Robin Hood country, book a room at the Best Western Bestwood Lodge (***), a historical lodge set in 700 acres of beautiful parkland. It’s the former hunting estate of King Charles II and still only 4 miles out of the city centre. If you’d prefer to be right in the heart of the action, the Nottingham City Centre Premier Travel Inn is located beside the canals, with their bars and restaurants, and just a 5 minute walk to the city centre. Premier Apartments Nottingham (****) offer one and two bedroom units as well as luxury penthouse apartments in the centre of the city. The Olive Tree (**) is a small hotel in the business area of the city, just a minute’s walk away from the castle. The Park Plaza Nottingham (****) offers luxury accommodation near Old Market Square and the nightlife of the Lace Market area.
