Ideas for 24 Hours in London
By Ben Jackson
Recently voted the world’s trendiest city, London is a bustling, vibrant mix of culture, art, history and gastronomy. The smoggy Dickensian haze of yore has long gone and London is now threaded by a spruced up Thames – so clean you can now drink its water apparently – flanked by a number of world heritage sites. A trip down this will take you past the Houses of Parliament, the London Eye, the city’s financial landmarks such as ‘The Gherkin’ and the futuristic Canary Wharf right through to the historic settlement of Greenwich and its beautiful green spaces. The city is a melting pot of culture and host to a wealth of communities. North London has a strong Mediterranean community with Islington boasting a number of delicious Greek, Italian and Portuguese eateries. South London rivals this with some seriously good West Indian and eastern restaurants and East London’s Brick Lane is great for a curry and a lager before a night out. London is a centrifuge for nightlife and you can find something to suit all palettes any night of the week. London’s theatre land sits in the West side of the city and there is a hit musical or star-studded play every other footstep along Shaftsbury Avenue. There are some enormous clubs around Covent Garden, Leicester Square and London’s main shopping mecca - Oxford Street. These belt out the popular tunes of the moment and are great for stag and hen parties. But if you’re after something a little more alternative, try the boutique bars and clubs of East London’s Shoreditch and Hoxton. History envelops the city. You just have to look up from the bustling streets to see some stunning pre-war buildings or iconic landmarks such as St Paul’s cathedral or Big Ben. Why not take an open top bus tour of the city and stop by her Majesty’s for a tea along route?
